WHICH PRODUCTS REQUIRE PRESERVATION?
It is vitally important that the products we put on our skin (and those of our family members!) be as safe from contamination and rancidity as those you consume. We all know that fresh food spoils and needs to be handled with care and consumed before rotting sets in. Yet many of are not aware that this same policy must be implemented when applying most unpreserved skincare products.
REAL SOAPS DOES NOT REQUIRE PRESERVATION!
Natural, real, old fashion Castile soap DO CONTAIN water! BUT, they have a ph of 9, which is high enough to prevent the proliferation of bacteria, mold and fungus.
Products which DO NOT include water, such as powdered scrub bases and 100% plant oil blends, do not require a broad spectrum chemical preservative.
Anti-rancidity ingredients ARE included in the 100% plant oil blends to increase the shelf life of the oils: Vitamin E and Rosemary Leaf Oil Extract (ROE). Both of these ingredients are packed with antioxidants which protect the oils from oxidative factors such as heat, light and air.
No PRESERVATIVE? HANDLE WITH CARE!
Products which contain only anti-rancidity ingredients but no broad spectrum preservatives must be handled with care to avoid contamination from water. See the next section for more information ....
DID YOU KNOW?
WATER CONTAMINATION IS A BIG PROBLEM IN SKINCARE
Plain old water, keep it OUT of all your skin care products! There are so many ways that water can make it into your lotions, shampoos, conditioners etc. And while most chemically preserved products can handle a small amount of water getting in (like a scrub that is in your shower, or a shampoo bottle left open) safe practices can ensure a longer shelf life.
Produce which do not contain a preservative must be protected from contamination from water.
All lotions, body butters, shampoos & conditioners include WATER so they do require a preservative. On the long list of chemical preservatives, I have choosen eco-friendly, plant derived preservatives to keep my products SAFE! There just is no away around this, BE WARY of any product which contains water (other than REAL Castille Soap!) but no preservative.
USE 'EM UP!
How many open bottles and jars are in your bathroom? A best safe practice is to DISCARD products left open for more than 6 months. Play it safe! Why risk the damage that can be done to your skin by applying rancid or contaminated products to your skin, hair or scalp.
Don't trust your nose to determine if your product has gone back, it product might smell and look just fine, but be swarming with bacteria or fungi that are dangerous to your health.
